Houthis threaten retaliation against U.S. airstrikes in Yemen
Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi has issued a warning about possible "escalation" in response to recent U.S. airstrikes in Yemen. These strikes, ordered by President Donald Trump, targeted Houthi positions and resulted in the deaths of at least 53 people, including children. The airstrikes are part of a strategy aimed at putting pressure on Iran, which supports the Houthis. Trump has connected actions by the Houthis to Iran and threatened repercussions if such attacks continue. In retaliation, supporters of the Houthis have staged rallies in multiple cities, promising revenge against both the U.S. and Israel. The United Nations has urged an end to military actions in Yemen. Since late 2023, the Houthis have conducted maritime attacks on over 100 merchant vessels, increasing their visibility in the region. Trump has also accused Iran of reducing its military support for the Houthis and has warned against further arms shipments to the group.
