Houston runner honors late son by founding nonprofit for families facing childhood cancer

Nyria Gallardo, a Houston marathon runner, lost her son Matthew to cancer in May 2023 at age nine. In his memory, she founded a nonprofit called Miles 4 Matthew to support families facing similar challenges. Gallardo, 44, is participating in the 2025 Aramco Houston Half Marathon. She uses running as a way to cope with her grief and honor her son’s memory. Miles 4 Matthew aims to alleviate the financial stress on families dealing with childhood cancer, allowing them to focus on their children's health.
