HIV stigma poses greater risk than virus itself, research highlights
HIV stigma remains a significant issue, despite advancements in treatment that allow people living with HIV to lead healthy lives. Recent studies show that many individuals still fear disclosing their status and experience discrimination in healthcare settings. A 2023 survey revealed that one in three people with HIV had not informed family members of their diagnosis due to fear of rejection. Additionally, many healthcare workers expressed concerns about treating HIV patients, which can lead to distrust and avoidance of medical services. Research in Ireland indicates that knowledge of the "U=U" message—meaning undetectable equals untransmittable—can reduce stigma among healthcare workers. Increased awareness of this message may help create a more supportive environment for people living with HIV.
