High Seas Treaty takes effect to protect international marine life
The High Seas Treaty, a landmark agreement to protect international marine life, officially took effect on January 17, 2026. This treaty governs vast ocean areas beyond national control, crucial for global climate stability. The treaty establishes the first framework for creating marine protected areas on the high seas, which currently have minimal protection. It mandates environmental impact assessments for activities that could harm marine life and requires sharing of findings from research on ocean organisms. Ratified by 83 countries, including major maritime powers, the treaty aims to help achieve the goal of protecting 30 percent of the world's oceans by 2030. Key operational details and the establishment of monitoring and enforcement mechanisms are still being developed.
