Health officials identify cause of food poisoning outbreak at Maryland fish distribution facility
A food poisoning outbreak at NAFCO Wholesale Fish Distribution Facility in Maryland sickened 46 workers after they ate a homemade noodle dish called pancit. The Maryland Department of Health identified Staphylococcus aureus bacteria as the cause. The incident occurred on October 21, with symptoms appearing about three hours after lunch. At least 26 employees were hospitalized but have since recovered. NAFCO stated the meal was prepared at home and served outside the factory. Officials noted that S. aureus is usually harmless but can cause food poisoning if food is improperly handled. The exact cause of the contamination is still unclear, with possibilities including unwashed hands or improper cooking.
