Handwriting expert uncovers true identity of Byzantine painter Manuel Panselinos

A handwriting expert has potentially identified the true name of a prominent Byzantine painter, previously known as Manuel Panselinos. Research suggests that Panselinos may have been a nickname for Ioannis Astrapas, a painter from Thessaloniki. The discovery stems from a comparison of lettering on a manuscript attributed to Astrapas and a church painting linked to Panselinos. This analysis was conducted by court handwriting expert Christina Sotirakoglou, who faced challenges due to restrictions on women entering Mount Athos. Father Cosmas Simonopetritis, who contributed to the research, believes this evidence confirms Astrapas as the real identity of Panselinos. The findings highlight the artist's significant role in the evolution of Orthodox art during the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
