Hamilton teen gets home detention for smash-and-grab spree

Hamilton teenager Raven Taoho avoided prison for a smash-and-grab crime spree and was instead sentenced to nine months' home detention. Because Taoho was 17 during the robberies, the Crown conceded he could be sentenced only for aggravated burglary; five burglary charges and two vehicle-theft charges were dismissed. His 23-month prison term was converted to home detention after discounts for his plea, youth, background, and remorse. The spree hit supermarkets, bottle stores, and petrol stations, with the group disguised and armed. Co-offenders were jailed earlier. Judge Tini Clark warned Taoho that breaching his sentence would mean re-sentencing, potentially to prison.
