Hamilton photographer creates 3D models of iconic GTHA buildings for preservation

A Hamilton photographer, Mathew Alex, is creating 3D models of iconic buildings in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. His work aims to preserve structures like the City Centre and Ontario Science Centre, which are set for demolition. Alex began this project in 2021 while working with the Hamilton Public Library. He uses drones and specialized software to capture and recreate buildings in 3D, allowing for immersive viewing experiences through virtual and augmented reality. He plans to scan more buildings, including the Toronto Reference Library and Bata Shoe Museum. Alex hopes to donate his collection to Archives Ontario for public access in the future.
