Haiti sees surge in murder rate with over 1200 deaths in three months

Haiti's murder rate surged from July to September, with over 1,200 deaths reported, marking a 27 percent increase from the previous quarter. This rise is linked to ongoing gang violence in the country. A UN report noted that 1,223 people were killed, with nearly half attributed to gangs. However, 45 percent of the deaths resulted from law enforcement actions, including at least 106 extrajudicial killings. The report also indicated a 40 percent rise in violence from self-defense groups, which accounted for about eight percent of the total killings.
