Guwahati forms committees for river desiltation oversight

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

The Guwahati government has formed 21 monitoring committees to oversee desiltation work of river channels and drains. This aims to improve transparency and effectiveness in managing the city's stormwater system, which includes five major river channels and 575 drains. Housing and urban affairs minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced that an SOP will guide these committees in their monitoring tasks. Desiltation work is already in progress, with the first phase expected to finish by March to prevent flooding in April. The government plans to use satellite imagery to monitor illegal structures affecting drainage and will take action against violations. Efforts are underway to enhance the city's drainage infrastructure and restore natural water bodies, including transforming Silsaku Beel into a larger reservoir.
