Gulf Coast gas could power US for 14 months
A US Geological Survey estimates the Gulf Coast holds enough undiscovered natural gas to power the entire United States for 14 months. The assessment found 35.8 trillion cubic feet of gas and 28 million barrels of oil are technically recoverable. The gas is located in the Hosston and Travis Peak formations, stretching from Texas to Florida. The formations have previously produced 8 trillion cubic feet of gas. Production would involve drilling and fracking. The US currently produces nearly all of its natural gas needs. The USGS assessment focuses on undiscovered resources, and the gas is "tight gas" trapped deep underground.
