Guitarist reveals Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' was originally too metal for pop radio
Michael Jackson's guitarist, Steve Lukather, revealed that "Beat It" was originally more metal-oriented. Quincy Jones advised Lukather to tone it down for pop radio, emphasizing the need for a sound that would appeal to a wider audience. Lukather initially played hard rock guitar parts, inspired by Eddie Van Halen's contributions. However, Jones, who was working on another project, communicated over the phone that the track needed to be less heavy and more radio-friendly. "Beat It" became a major hit after its release in 1983, topping charts in five countries. Quincy Jones, who produced Jackson's iconic albums, passed away earlier this month, with a private funeral held for family members.
