Grangemouth refinery to lay off over 400 workers as Petroineos shifts to import terminal
More than 400 workers at the Grangemouth refinery in Scotland are being laid off as Petroineos plans to close the facility and convert it into an import terminal. Only about 65 of the 500 staff will remain employed. The job losses will occur over the next three to 18 months. Trade unions and local politicians have criticized the decision, calling for government intervention to protect jobs and support a transition to sustainable fuel production. Petroineos stated that the site will operate as a fuel distribution hub starting in the second quarter of this year. The full closure of the refinery is expected to take around five years.
