Granada-born Pepe Habichuela, key guitarist of new flamenco, dies at 82

Pepe Habichuela, key guitarist of new flamenco, died Tuesday at 82. His work was crucial in evolving flamenco with new musical languages. Born in Granada in 1944 into a flamenco family, he was a key figure in new flamenco, especially through work with Enrique Morente. He was father and uncle of Ketama members, performing over 60 years with artists like Camarón de la Isla. Away from stages for two years due to illness, his final appearance was six months ago to receive the Grand Cross of Alfonso X from Pedro Sánchez. Albums include "Habichuela en rama" (1997).
