Government forms task force to investigate alleged disinformation campaign following PTI protest claims

dawn.com

The government has established a joint task force (JTF) to investigate a campaign it claims is aimed at discrediting the state. This follows allegations from the PTI that 12 supporters died during protests in Islamabad, which the government denies, stating security forces used no live ammunition. The Prime Minister's Office accused the PTI of spreading false information and using old or AI-generated images to support their claims. The JTF will identify those responsible for creating and disseminating misleading news from November 24-27, 2024, and report its findings within ten days. The task force will be led by retired General Hafeezur Rehman and will also address previous violence linked to PTI protests. The interior ministry has dismissed claims of casualties, stating major hospitals have not confirmed any deaths from law enforcement actions.
