Google's Orbital AI Chip Beams First Space-Generated Haiku

pcmag.com —

Google received its first-ever AI response from a Tensor Processing Unit chip in orbit, marking a milestone for Project Suncatcher. The satellite beamed back a haiku generated by its Gemma 4 model during a pass over Norway. The prototype launched Oct. 1 with Planet via SpaceX, proving TPUs can execute workloads in space. This paves the way for twin interconnected satellites planned for 2027, despite challenges like cosmic radiation and cooling. Google plans fleets of over 80 formation-flying satellites and a custom satellite the length of a soccer field. SpaceX and Amazon's Jeff Bezos are also pursuing orbital data centers for AI computing.
