Google Workspace enables direct editing of password-protected Office files

Google Workspace now allows direct editing of password-protected Microsoft Office files, removing a long-standing barrier. Users can now enter a password to open and edit Office documents within Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, with the protection removed upon editing. This update, rolling out to all Workspace and free personal accounts starting January 16, 2026, enhances interoperability but removes password protection during editing.
