Google launches first test satellite for orbital AI data center project
Google launched its first test satellite for Project Suncatcher, an orbital AI data center initiative, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Thursday from Vandenberg Space Force Base, marking a significant step in the race to deploy computing facilities in space. The prototype aims to test how Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) withstand the rigors of launch and space radiation, with the company planning two additional satellites in 2027. The test vehicle will power down every 20 minutes to avoid overheating, and its 1-kilowatt power supply is far below the 50-100 kilowatts needed for operational systems. Space-based data centers face significant hurdles, including heat dissipation in a vacuum, radiation-induced "bit flips," and hardware obsolescence, as AI chips advance every 1-2 years while satellites last 5-7 years. SpaceX plans a constellation of up to 1 million AI-computing satellites, while Google's 2025 paper proposed clusters of 81 satellites.
