Google deleted Maps Timeline data for some users

Google Maps recently experienced a problem that caused some users to lose their Timeline data. The Timeline feature helps people see where they went on specific days, but a new update is coming soon. The update will change how the Timeline works. In the future, this information will only be stored on individual devices. It will no longer be kept on Google's servers, improving user privacy. However, this transition led to unintended deletions of some users' Timeline data. Those affected will not be able to retrieve their lost information unless they had set up encrypted cloud backups. Unfortunately, it is likely that very few users took that extra step. A Google spokesperson said this issue was due to a technical error, not user mistakes. If you lost your Timeline data and have not received an email from Google, you are likely safe from this issue. Google has reached out to those impacted to explain what happened.
