Goa police constable suspended for misappropriating ₹17 lakh in traffic fines
A woman police constable in Goa has been suspended for misappropriating ₹17.3 lakh in traffic fines over 11 months. The issue was discovered during an investigation into discrepancies in official records at the Bicholim police station. The constable has returned the misappropriated funds to the state treasury. A preliminary inquiry confirmed the misappropriation, leading to a detailed investigation by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer. This incident highlights ongoing issues with traffic fine collections in India, where significant amounts have been collected in recent years. Between 2019 and 2024, states and Union Territories collected approximately ₹12,632 crore in traffic fines.
