Global sea ice reaches record low in February 2025
Global sea ice cover reached a record low in February 2025, with temperatures near the North Pole 11 degrees Celsius above average. This marks the third-hottest February on record, continuing a warming trend since 2023. Combined Antarctic and Arctic sea ice dropped to 16.04 million square kilometers on February 7. Arctic ice was eight percent below average, while Antarctic ice was 26 percent below average, tying for the second-lowest extent in 47 years. The loss of sea ice does not affect sea levels but impacts weather patterns and ecosystems. Experts express concern that warm temperatures may hinder ice regrowth in Antarctica during winter.
