Global forced displacement reaches record high, says UN
The UN reports a record 122.1 million people were forcibly displaced globally by the end of April 2025, labeling the figure "untenably high." This represents a 2.1 million increase compared to the previous year. The UNHCR's report highlights major conflicts in Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine as primary drivers of displacement. Sudan now has the most forcibly displaced people, while funding for aid is being reduced by several countries, including the US and UK. Despite the grim statistics, nearly 2 million Syrians returned home in the last six months. The UNHCR is urging the international community to continue funding programs to address the ongoing crisis and support those displaced.
