Global alliance proposed to cut diabetic foot deaths and amputations

The Diabetic Foot Society of India has proposed forming a global alliance for diabetic foot survival and limb preservation, urging policy, research, and prevention efforts across leading international institutions. The proposal, sent to the Pan-African Diabetic Foot Study Group, highlights that diabetic foot ulceration causes premature death and disability with five-year mortality comparable to some cancers. It seeks collaboration with King's College London and other groups to create a scientific and policy platform. The alliance would advocate with the WHO and governments, aiming to reduce risk-adjusted five-year mortality by 30% and avoidable major amputations by 50% by 2030. DFSI plans to announce the intent at its conference on October 2, 2026.
