Giant Robot magazine celebrates 30 years of shaping Asian American pop culture
Giant Robot magazine, founded in 1994 by Eric Nakamura, explored Asian American culture through a mix of serious and playful content. Initially a small zine, it grew into a nationally distributed magazine, peaking in circulation in the early 2000s. The magazine featured diverse topics, from pop culture to personal stories, and included interviews with notable figures like Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung. It aimed to create a space for Asian American voices without strictly defining their identity. Recently, a new book titled "Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian American Pop Culture" was published, collecting significant articles and memories from contributors. This book highlights the magazine's impact on Asian American culture and its legacy in the media landscape.
