Getty Villa activates emergency measures as Palisades fire approaches
The Getty Villa activated its emergency operations center on Tuesday morning as the Palisades fire approached. By noon, flames had reached the property, but extensive fire prevention measures helped protect the museum and its collection of over 44,000 antiquities. Staff at the Villa implemented emergency protocols while others coordinated from the Getty Center. Communication challenges arose due to radio limitations, but live video feeds helped relay information. Firefighters managed to extinguish small blazes on the property. By evening, the fire was visible from the Getty Center, prompting officials to close that campus. The Villa remains safe for now, with much of the surrounding vegetation already burned.
