Germany shuts all Iranian consulates in response to execution of Jamshid Sharmahd
Germany has closed all three Iranian consulates in the country following the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, an Iranian-German prisoner. Sharmahd was executed in Iran on terrorism charges after a trial criticized by Germany and international rights groups. The closure affects consulates in Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich, leaving only the Iranian embassy in Berlin. This action marks a significant downgrade in diplomatic relations, as Germany had previously summoned Iran's charge d’affaires to protest the execution. Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the execution would have serious consequences. The European Union is also considering measures in response to Sharmahd's execution, which has strained relations with Iran.
