Germany brings back military conscription for 18-year-olds in 2026
Germany will reintroduce military conscription for all 18-year-olds starting in 2026. This decision aims to strengthen the country's defense capabilities in response to current security challenges. The new system includes a comprehensive draft registration for men born after January 1, 2008. A questionnaire will also be sent to all 18-year-olds, both male and female, to assess their motivation and suitability for service. This move is part of a compromise between the governing coalition parties, SPD and Union, to create a modern and attractive form of national service. If voluntary enlistment proves insufficient, a needs-based conscription, potentially using a lottery system, could be implemented.
