A German startup has debuted the world’s first diamond-based quantum computing system to exceed 10 qubits, operating at room temperature in a portable, rack-mounted unit. The nitrogen-vacancy diamond computer uses sulfur co-implantation to control qubits, achieves up to 128 qubits now and 512 next year, with 99.98% single-qubit fidelity. It plugs into standard AC power. Avoiding cryogenic cooling may benefit edge computing such as autonomous driving. However, scaling beyond 512 qubits will require packing far more qubits onto single chips.
