German foreign minister welcomes Putin's G20 invitation as test of intent

unian.net (Russian) —

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation to the G20 summit as a return to the circle of Western leaders, according to DPA. Wadephul called the invitation a litmus test of Putin's readiness for good-faith negotiations, saying such opportunities must be used and urging Russia to finally sit at the negotiating table to end the war. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand expressed surprise at US President Donald Trump's decision to invite Putin to the December summit but saw no reason for Canada to boycott it, despite 14 senators urging Trump to withdraw the invitation due to sanctions on Russian officials.
