A ruling is expected later. The photographer claims his copyright was violated because Laion downloaded and analyzed his images to filter its dataset of 5.85 billion text-image pairs. Lower courts in Hamburg dismissed the case, citing legal exceptions for text and data mining. The disputed Laion dataset contains only URL links, not image files, but required downloading images to verify text matches. The case tests whether automated analysis for patterns and trends legally justifies such use.
