An Italian man with a genetic eye disorder has regained his sight through an experimental gene therapy. The 38-year-old, suffering from Usher syndrome type 1b, underwent the world-first procedure in July 2024. A year later, his vision has been significantly restored, allowing him to see clearly in various conditions. Developed by TIGEM researchers, the therapy involves injecting viral vectors to deliver a missing gene. Seven other patients have also received the treatment with no serious side effects, with further trials planned.
