Gene fault causes spinal mineral buildup and back pain, UK zebrafish study shows

Genetic changes can cause mineral buildup in the spine that hardens it and triggers back pain, UK researchers found in a zebrafish study, suggesting possible drug targets. The study showed lack of a working collagen IX gene led to spinal fusions and disc degeneration resembling human disease. Disruptions in phosphate and fat metabolism preceded mineral deposits. Bisphosphonate, an osteoporosis drug, blocked mineral buildup; food restriction also reduced fusions. Back pain affects millions, with surgery currently the only long-term treatment.
