Gathering Place opens new emergency shelter and housing units at historic convent
The Gathering Place has opened a new expansion at the historic Sisters of Mercy Convent, now called Mercy House. This facility includes an emergency shelter and 52 transitional housing units, increasing capacity from 30 to over 90 people. Premier Andrew Furey attended the unveiling, which was supported by a $2 million donation from local business owners and additional funding from provincial and federal sources. The project aims to provide medical and mental health support to help break the cycle of homelessness. The new emergency shelter began operations on October 30, with transitional units being phased in. The Gathering Place, established in 1994, continues to expand its services to meet rising demand for shelter.
