FuriosaAI rejects Meta's acquisition offer, seeks investment

firstpost.com

FuriosaAI, a South Korean AI chip startup, has turned down an $800 million offer from Meta, a major US technology company. The rejection stems from disagreements about the structure and future plans of the organization, not the price itself. FuriosaAI is positioning itself as a competitor to NVIDIA in the semiconductor market. The company, founded by June Paik, has developed two AI chips named Warboy and Renegade (RNGD). These chips are designed to enhance the performance of AI applications. Currently, FuriosaAI is looking to raise around $48 million and is in discussions with potential investors. The company has completed testing its RNGD chips in collaboration with LG AI Research and Aramco. LG AI Research plans to use these chips in its AI systems, and FuriosaAI aims to launch them officially by the end of the year. Meta has been focused on boosting its AI capabilities, including the development of its Llama language models. To reduce its reliance on NVIDIA, Meta is building its own custom AI chips and has announced a significant $65 billion investment in its AI projects for this year. This includes expanding its AI workforce and constructing a new data center.
