From Family Pet to Podium: How Dogs Enter Beauty Competitions

adevarul.ro (Romanian) —

Over 200 dogs from more than 50 breeds competed in five canine beauty exhibitions in Slatina from October 2-4, with judges evaluating them against international breed standards to determine champions. The competitions, organized by the South-West Cynological Association, feature a pyramidal structure where dogs compete by age class and gender before winners advance to breed, group, and ultimately Best in Show titles. International judge Alin Dumitrescu explained these are conformity contests against standards set by the International Cynological Federation. Owners like Camelia Dinu from Craiova and Mircea Albulescu describe the pursuit as a passion rather than business, with monthly costs reaching approximately 1,000 euros for top specimens. Romanian Mioritic shepherd Franco has won over 160 competitions, including two world championships.
