French test: all eclipse glasses safe, but some fail labeling

quechoisir.org (French)

A test of 10 eclipse glasses models for the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse found all filter sunlight safely, despite some failing regulatory labeling requirements. The eclipse will be partial in France, blocking 90 to 99.9 percent of the sun. Lab tests confirmed all 10 models filter solar radiation, ultraviolet, and infrared adequately. However, some lacked manufacturer details, used English instructions, or had untraceable certificates. A fake special-edition magazine sold glasses with English-only instructions, and optician chain Écouter Voir halted its free distribution of 600,000 pairs over a disputed certificate. One in four people would observe without protection.
