Freelance reporters document life in war-torn Ukraine as conflict evolves
A group of freelance reporters arrived in Ukraine on February 25, 2022, to cover the Russia-Ukraine war. Initially, many expected Ukraine to fall quickly, but local forces successfully defended against Russian advances, notably liberating Kherson Oblast after six months. Despite ongoing conflict, civilians in Kherson Oblast face daily dangers from Russian attacks. In early 2023, intense fighting occurred in Bakhmut, resulting in significant casualties. Some civilians remain in the city, enduring extreme violence and risks from unexploded ordnance. Warfare tactics have evolved, with increased use of drones. In Kramatorsk, a recent missile strike destroyed residential buildings, causing casualties. A new drone team formed in 2023 helps coordinate artillery strikes, highlighting the changing nature of the conflict.
