France to deploy hypersonic missiles on Rafale fighters

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to deploy the new Rafale F5 fighter jets equipped with hypersonic nuclear cruise missiles. This decision was made during his visit to Luxeuil Air Base in eastern France. The move aims to strengthen France's nuclear deterrence amid growing security concerns in Europe, particularly due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The Rafale F5 jets, currently in development, will include advanced technology such as a 'loyal wingman' system and improvements in connectivity and electronic warfare capabilities. These multi-role jets can perform various missions, including air defense, nuclear deterrence, and reconnaissance. France will spend around $1.6 billion to modernize the Luxeuil air base, ensuring it can accommodate the latest missile technology. The ASN4G hypersonic nuclear missiles, also in development, will replace the existing ASMPA missiles. These new missiles will fly at speeds of Mach 7 and have a range of over 621 miles. This advancement is expected to significantly enhance France's nuclear capabilities, supporting European nations in their defense efforts. The fighter jets and missiles are part of a broader strategy to modernize France's military. By 2035, two squadrons of the Rafale F5 jets will be based at Luxeuil, contributing to Europe's nuclear defense posture.
