France introduces €450 million defense fund for security

BangkokPost.com

France's public investment bank, Bpifrance, will create a new defense fund worth 450 million euros, or about 490 million dollars. Finance Minister Eric Lombard announced this plan on Thursday. This move comes as France aims to boost its military spending amid rising security concerns, particularly due to fears of a Russian attack. The fund allows French citizens to invest in defense efforts with contributions starting at 500 euros. Lombard stated that this initiative aims to finance military needs more effectively. France is taking a leading role in European defense after noticing a potential shift in relations between Washington and Moscow. These changes have raised worries about Russia's influence in Europe. However, funding these defense projects will be challenging, given France's current high public deficit and debt. Francois Villeroy de Galhau, a member of the European Central Bank, highlighted that while increased defense spending is essential, it cannot be limitless. He warned against treating defense funding like the emergency spending seen during the Covid-19 pandemic. The French defense and finance ministries estimate that defense companies in France will require more than five billion euros in additional funding in the coming years. President Emmanuel Macron has already committed to doubling the defense budget during his terms and aims to increase spending to between 3% and 3.5% of the economy, up from the current 2%.
