Florida public universities have paused new H-1B visa hires, following Texas's lead. This action comes after Governor DeSantis called for a crackdown on alleged visa abuse in higher education. The temporary ban applies to new hires at the 12 State University System of Florida institutions and will last until January 5, 2027. It aims to allow for an examination of the program's costs and usage. This suspension does not affect current H-1B employees but impacts prospective foreign faculty. Last year, over 600 H-1B visas were approved for these universities.
