Flavonoid-rich diet lowers risk of liver disease, study finds

news-medical.net

A recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a diet rich in flavonoids, particularly from tea, apples, and dark chocolate, can lower the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This contrasts with previous treatments that primarily focused on weight loss. The study analyzed data from over 121,000 adults in the UK Biobank, revealing that those with higher flavonoid intake had a 19% lower risk of developing NAFLD. Specifically, higher consumption of apples and tea was linked to a 22% and 14% reduction in risk, respectively. Additionally, participants with the highest flavonoid intake showed lower liver fat content and improved liver health markers. These findings suggest that dietary changes could play a significant role in managing liver health, highlighting the importance of flavonoid-rich foods.
