Five-state panel to oversee Yamuna cleanup from source to Ganga

The central government has formed an interstate committee with chief secretaries from five Yamuna basin states to oversee the river's rejuvenation plan, aiming to stop pollution from its source to its confluence with the Ganga. The panel is chaired by the Union home secretary. The committee reviews a 10-point agenda including waste management, water quality monitoring, wetland upkeep, and sewage treatment plant construction. States have submitted plans on industrial waste, e-flow improvements, and sewage treatment gaps, with officials noting interstate drains like Shahdara and Najafgarh require coordinated action. The Yamuna's 22-kilometre Delhi stretch carries the heaviest pollution load. Three upstream dam projects in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, slated for completion between 2032 and 2035, will add 754 cusecs for e-flow, while roughly 200 million litres of wastewater daily enters the river from Uttar Pradesh drains.
