Fitness enthusiast suffers heart attack during first Hyrox event in Manchester

Ashley Whelan, a 37-year-old fitness enthusiast from Manchester, suffered a heart attack after competing in his first Hyrox event. Initially attributing his symptoms to nerves, he experienced a heart rate spike of 220 bpm during the race. After finishing, Whelan felt sharp chest pains and sought medical help. An ECG confirmed he was having a heart attack, leading to urgent treatment for a blockage in his left coronary artery. Whelan has since recovered and emphasizes the importance of listening to one's body. His gym is now fundraising to purchase a defibrillator for their facility.
