Filmmaker killed by giraffe at South African safari lodge

Filmmaker Carlos Carvalho, 47, died in 2018 after a giraffe named Gerald struck him in the head with its neck at a South African safari lodge while he was filming. The incident occurred at Glen Afric farm in Broederstroom, where Carvalho was shooting footage. Witnesses said the giraffe swung its head unexpectedly, knocking the cameraman to the ground; he was airlifted to a Johannesburg hospital but died that evening. Lodge officials said Gerald would not be euthanized, as he posed no danger, and noted Carvalho had breached safety guidelines by straying too close. Carvalho, a Cannes Lion winner, was remembered as a talented director of photography.
