Fiji faces significant HIV outbreak linked to meth use
Fiji is facing a significant HIV outbreak, with over 1,000 cases reported last year, a threefold increase from 2023. The surge is linked to rising methamphetamine use and needle-sharing practices, prompting health authorities to declare an outbreak in January. Half of those with HIV in Fiji are not receiving treatment, complicating containment efforts. The health system, previously focused on sexual transmission, is struggling to address the growing number of cases driven by intravenous drug use. In response, Fiji's Health Minister announced a 90-day plan to improve treatment access and prevention efforts. Public awareness campaigns, including a National Condom Campaign, aim to reduce stigma and promote safe practices amid the ongoing crisis.
