FIFA rates Saudi Arabia's human rights risk as medium in World Cup bid evaluation
FIFA has rated Saudi Arabia's human rights risk as "medium" in its evaluation of the country's bid for the 2034 World Cup. This assessment has drawn criticism for overlooking severe human rights issues, including worker exploitation and repression of activists. An independent report, delayed until late November 2024, confirms FIFA's responsibility to compensate migrant workers abused during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Despite this, FIFA launched a Legacy Fund that does not include compensation for these workers. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have called for FIFA to take action. They argue that without meaningful reforms in Saudi Arabia and compensation for workers, similar human rights violations are likely to occur again.
