Field of study outweighs institution type in graduate employment outcomes

A new study by Edulog finds that a graduate's field of study impacts employment outcomes more than the type of institution attended, with half of Humanities graduates working in jobs below their qualification level. The research, analyzing graduates from 2016/17 and 2020/21, shows that field of study is the main factor influencing employment, wages, and job satisfaction. Graduates in ICT and Engineering earn more, while those in Arts and Humanities face higher rates of overqualification, affecting 50% of Humanities graduates versus 6.2% in Medicine. The study also reveals worsening conditions for young graduates, with the share facing no disadvantages dropping from 14.1% to 7.8%. Women continue to earn less and face higher unemployment risks. Researchers recommend providing students with more detailed information on job quality, not just unemployment rates, to guide their decisions.
