Federal grant funds new technology to ease I-680 congestion in Contra Costa County

A $166 million federal grant will fund new technology to improve traffic flow on I-680 in Contra Costa County. This project aims to monitor real-time traffic and adjust ramp metering to reduce congestion. The technology will allow for better management of traffic by identifying gaps in lanes and optimizing vehicle entry. I-680 is among the most congested corridors in the Bay Area, with traffic levels returning to pre-pandemic conditions. The project, part of President Biden's infrastructure plan, will take about two years to design before construction begins. Completion is expected by 2028.
