Federal government allocates $6 million for Iqaluit hydroelectric project
The federal government is investing $6 million into a hydro project near Iqaluit, aimed at reducing the city's reliance on diesel power. This funding will support engineering and design work for the Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit Project. The project, previously stalled due to high costs, is now managed by the Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation. It will be located on the Kuugaluk River, about 60 kilometers northwest of Iqaluit. This new investment follows a previous $7 million funding in 2021 to assess the project's feasibility. The total cost of the hydroelectric project is estimated between $400 and $500 million.
