Federal government allocates $2.4 billion for railroad upgrades across 41 states
The federal government is distributing $2.4 billion in grants for 122 railroad projects across 41 states and Washington, D.C. More than half of the funding will support smaller railroads, focusing on track and bridge upgrades. The largest project is a $215 million grant for a new Hudson River bridge in New York, with the state covering 60% of the total cost. Other significant grants include nearly $160 million for track consolidation in Illinois and $100 million for climate-resilient tracks in California. The funding also aims to enhance rail safety and support the development of hydrogen-powered locomotives. Nearly $1.3 billion will be allocated to 81 projects at short line railroads, which are expected to improve service and connectivity for rural areas.
